Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)

During 2012 we were able to present several RDSP workshops.

January 4th, we presented in Kelowna for the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Later in the month, we braved a heavy snowfall, driving to Revelstoke on January 14th to present at Community Connections. At that time we also presented  a Wills, Estate and Trust Fund workshop lead by lawyer Geoffrey W. White.

February 2012 saw us presenting in Vernon at the People Place along with Nancy Ford of PLAN in Vancouver.  We were able to add to the RDSP presentation a Beyond Graduation Workshop.  An RDSP is a very important tool in planning beyond graduation; and it was a great opportunity for families to hear more about this program.

July 5th, saw us back in Salmon Arm presenting to families, hosted by Donna Miller of the BCSS.  Summer in the Okanagan is usually means beaches, picnics and trying to keep cool, this summer it was also a time for families and professionals come out and hear about the RDSP.  Thank you Donna for inspiring so many people to come out.

In December, we presented several workshops, the first in Kelowna on December 8th.  CLBC kindly allowed us to use their offices for this presentation.  We had a large crowd out and thank these families, self advocates and professionals for spending a Saturday morning with us learning more about the Registered Disability Savings Plan.

On December 14th, we were at Seaton Centre in Vernon, presenting to families and professionals.  Some of these folks had attended earlier presentations, but the material is complex and often we find that there are more questions after the presentation than answers.  We are pleased that HRSDC has provided an opportunity for us to do these  workshops to help bring some clarity to the material.

On December 18th, we presented to a group of self advocates in Kelowna, the folks most affected by this federally funded program.  This was an amazing group of men and women and their insights were a great gift to the presenters.  Thank you to Shelly for hosting this event.

Beyond Graduation and Future Planning 2012

In February we presented a Beyond Graduation workshop in Vernon.  We had a wonderful group of youth, parents, and service providers out for this workshop.  Nancy Ford of Vancouver joined us for the day.

Justin speaking at Beyond Graduation workshop

Highlights of the day included our guest speakers.  Jason who spoke to the group on his life adventures.  Jason is part of Vernon’s Toastmasters group and was a very engaging speaker.

Our other youth speaker, brought her mom along to assist her.  She also brought along her PATH and shared it with the group.  This useful tool allowed us to see how she made plans for her future; it also documented those which have been fulfilled.  It was a great pleasure to hear first hand how her dreams, turned into plans,  then actions and played themselves out providing a good life for our speaker.

An added bonus to this workshop was a workshop within the workshop – a presentation on  the RDSP.  Featuring this important tool in future planning.

On March 3rd, in Kelowna we offered a Beyond Graduation workshop.  CLBC on Manhattan Drive graciously allowed us to use their space to present this workshop.  This popular workshop saw many families, youth and parents, come out and participate in the day long presentation.  P3081271

While the parents slipped into another room to discuss their burning questions; the youth spent some time starting a college of what their dreams look like.  And they dreamed big.

Afterwards, parents and youth worked together to make plans for their future.  The beginning of this life long project.

The Future Planning workshops that began in the fall of 2011, continue on in Vernon.  We met several more times in the New Year discussing the various areas of future planning.   We hope to present this series again in 2013.
